Your data, plainly

The short version, in the order it matters to you.

What you type about your business stays yours

None of it is ever pooled, shared, or used to improve Puffins for anyone else: not the brief you write, not the notes you leave on a rating, not your business name, your customers or your prices. This is built into how the data is stored rather than just promised. The part of a rating that holds your words is kept separate from the part that can be exported, and the export reads a fixed list of fields that does not include it.

When you rate a post, the post and the rating help us improve

A thumbs up or down travels with the post we made, the style you picked, and the reasons you tapped. Those reasons are sentences we wrote, not text you typed. That bundle is what teaches Puffins to make better posts, for you first and for other businesses too.

Your brief becomes a category, never a quote

To be useful, a rating needs to know roughly what kind of post it was. So “20% off all pastries today” is recorded as a promotion, and that is all that is kept. There are eight such categories and none of them can carry your words.

You can turn sharing off, and it is not retroactive

Once you have an account, the switch is on your brand page. It starts on. Turning it off stops new ratings being shared, while ratings you already gave keep the setting they were given under, in both directions. We chose that deliberately: a switch that rewrote the past would mean neither answer could be relied on.

Your account is never named in any of it

Where we need to tell one business's ratings apart from another's, we use a one-way code rather than your identity, and the code differs between our own systems so the two cannot be joined.

What we look up about you, and where from

If you give us your Instagram handle during setup, we read your public posts to learn what your place looks like. We only read what anyone could see without logging in, and we never ask for your password. You can skip it and show us a few images instead. The difference is that we guess more.

Your images

Photos you upload and posters we make for you are stored so you can come back to them. They are yours. Delete them whenever you like and the file goes with the record.

What we make is yours to use

Posters, stills and captions Puffins produces for you are yours. Post them, print them or edit them, and you do not need to credit us. We generate from your own brand and your own photos, so check anything you publish is right before it goes out. We make pictures. We do not check your facts, your prices or your opening hours.

Questions about any of this are fair and we would rather answer them than have you guess. Last updated 9 August 2026.
